Unfortunately charities are allowed under the DNCR. Because of this I believe people have set up fake organizations in a effort to get around the DNCR so the can trick people into donating.
Call but no message - Caller ID was "Breast Cancer S". Other sources indicate this caller may be "Breast Cancer Awareness", though I can't vouch for the accuracy of this information. This *may* be the entity with a distinctly amateurish web site at http://www.breastcancerawareness.com/ (they're not listed by charitynavigator.org) and is a little vague about what they do with any money they receive (they have a Cafe Press store at which they sell various items). On the other hand, the web site's "donate" page lists only organizations other than themselves and ranks them by their charitynavigator.org star rating - not bad.
This is actually a LOCAL cell phone number for WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS (BERKSHIRE COUNTY.) SHAME ON THESE PEOPLE for perpetrating a SCAM like this on their OWN NEIGHBORS.
We weren't home so didn't answer and machine was FULL of other SPAM.
Just wanted people to know THIS IS A SCAM and to NEVER GIVE TO SO-CALLED "CHARITIES" WHO **COLD-CALL** YOU OVER THE PHONE. You have NO WAY of verifying who they really are and if they are legit. So, tell them NO! or better yet, don't even answer.
Donate ONLY to charities you recognize and for whom you've checked out via charitynavigator.org (even some big, recognizable names are mostly SCAMS because they use the bulk of donations to ENRICH THEIR EXECS.))
