Unfortunately charities are allowed under the DNCR. Because of this I believe people have set up fake organizations in a effort to get around the DNCR so the can trick people into donating.
Yeah, they called us last night wanting to donate to the "Breast Cancer Society", and we NEVER donate money over the phone, practically hung up on me when I said no...
We received a call from this number but did not answer. When I called the number which appeared on our caller ID I heard a recording that I had reached the Breast Cancer Society. I googled the society and could not find any phone number for them in Massachusetts. Although the Breast Cancer Society appears to be a legitimate organization, it appears that their name is being used for a scam.
Received a call from this number. Caller ID had the # and Springfield MA. Did not answer and they waited until my voice mail kicked in but did not leave a message. What a shame to see an organization to use something as serious as Breast Cancer Society for a scam. I totally agree with others to NEVER give any donation to someone over the phone....unless YOU make the call. I will answer the next time and give them a piece of my mind.
I just received a call from these folks. The woman on the other end asked to speak to "the lady of the house". When I asked "who is calling please?" - twice - and got no answer, I then said "please identify yourself". The woman hung up without saying anything. Then I called the number back, in order to ask to be removed from their call list. There is no way to talk to a live person there. You must leave a message including your name/address/phone, and other identifying information. None of the choices in their recorded message - which stated I had reached the Breast Cancer Society - mention how to be removed from their list either. I decided not to give them more info about me, but if they continue to call, I will put in a complaint at donotcall.gov.
The main problem is, they may claim to be covered by the exception to the "do not call" list (which I am on) which allows charities to fund raise over the phone. However the Breast Cancer Society is NOT itself a charity - they are a business who makes money from the donations they collect. By donating via a 3rd party like this, the charity you are trying to help will not get all of your donation - a substantial part of it goes towards paying for the cost of having a 3rd party solicit on their behalf. Your donation should be given directly to the charity of your choice, bypassing any 3rd party fund raising companies (legit or not).
I received a call on my private phone. A woman (or woman's voice, but it sounded like a real person) asked if David was there (my husband.) I found this strange, as he never gets calls on my personal line, so I asked who was calling. A recording immediately started identifying themselves as A.C. Services, claiming to be raising money for breast cancer, to help people who cannot afford treatment, and so on. When it got to the part about sending a pledge card, I just hung up. Very weird that someone asked for David yet didn't bother even waiting for him to come to the phone before starting a prerecorded spiel. The whole thing seemed kind of weird so I blacklisted the number. Plus, I, like many here, don't go for phone solicitations. There are too many scam artists in the world. If I'm going to contribute to a cause, I'll hunt THEM down to donate.
