My husband and I both got calls from a number that only said 201 on our cell pone caller ids. The automated message said our bank debit card had been deactivated and that we needed to call an 1800 number to reactivated it. We both got the call about one and half hours apart. The message said a company name that was unfamiliar to both of us.
I received a call from this same number. I called the number and was asked to press 1 to activate my card. I immediately hung up. Will call my credit union tomorrow (Monday) to report this.
I work for the Campus of Notre Dame. We have been overwhelmed with calls regarding this phone number. I have contacted the man in charge of security for the Notre Dame Credit Union and he and others there are looking into this problem. It is definately a phone scam that has nothing to do with the credit union.
Research on this number indicates it is located in Ogden, Iowa. According to the 2000 census, Ogden had a population of just over 2,000. This looks like a scam. Most likely the area code is being spoofed by the real user. Verify with your local financial institution before you provide any information to this number.
I got the call @ about 2:30 eastern time... the message said my card from Notre Dame Federal Credit Union had been suspended; I thought maybe they had the wrong number, for I do not have a card from this institution, so I tried to call back to let them know, and to make sure no one had opened up such an account with my info.; when I tried to return the call, I got a strange error message saying that either the phone # was no good, or that the five digit code I had entered maybe was entered wrong (or something to that effect). I shoule have googled the # first. I imagine no damage was done.
