I don't think this is a collection agency, it's a scam of some sort. They've called this business daily, asking for an employee who no longer works for the company. Indian accent, always claims "Andrew" told him to call. When I asked to speak to Andrew, his line is busy. I finally told the Indian guy I was calling the local police to file a harassment report. He suddenly was able to take our name and number off the calling list.
Lora, (1) you have no obligation to speak with these people. They can continue to call you, but you don't have to answer if you see the number on caller ID nor return the call if a message is left. (2) These companies get a higher percentage if they can collect the whole amount at once from you, e.g. you get another loan to pay them off. (3) These companies cannot simply garnish your wages without taking the time to go to court and getting a judgment against you for a certain amount. That costs them time and money they don't want to spend. (4) If you can now make payments on your student loans, go straight to the Dept. of Education website and see who to contact to begin making regular payments in order to establish a record of payments and hopefully get your loans out of default status. [You don't have to work through whatever collection agency is calling you, and most arrearages can be tacked on to the end of the loan.] Moreover, if you have your old payment booklets and send the company what you can, they MUST accept it even if it isn't for the full amount of the entire loan or the monthly payment.
Do not talk to a collection agency. Any problems you have with student loans should be handled directly with the Department of Education. Debt collectors do not have the knowledge or intelligence to deal with difficult student loan issues. They are only there to bully you into paying money. They usually have a big chip on their shoulder when it comes to handling student loan cases because they couldn't go to college themselves.
