This is a phishing scam. Got a call and VM this morning from this number. The voicemail did a good job of making it sound like a legitimate call from American Express, with a reference number and extension. I called the actual American Express and they confirmed that this is not one of their numbers. Do not give any information to this number.
Called to verify a credit card application. Put me on the line with wellsfargo (my current bank) to verify address. The 2nd guy on the line from wellsfargo wanted my account number. I wouldn't give it out, is this suspicous?
Absolutely not suspicious--I work for customer service for American Express and that is in fact the generic number that shows on caller ID when a call leaves our building's phone network to an outside line. You most likely recieved a call from our new accounts department--but no worries, I'm sure there are alternate ways to process your application. :)
