Careful with these calls from Amex. Have them confirm your social to them or other item. DO NOT give them information right away. Scammers will spoof the caller ID to show this #!

Watch out!

Please people!,
If you applied for a CC or anything to do with Amex, you should always call them. Never ever give out any info unless you call them. The back of the card has the number or look up Customer Service Number on the web. I don't care if the President called me, I'd still say " Cool, let me call the white house and ask for you babe!"
"leave my name with the House Secretary"
Bye

No, this is not American Express. It's a scam caller claiming to be AmEx, "vishing" for account information.  You can read about my experience here, if you'd like: http://tinyurl.com/6cxlgcu

If you have an AmEx account, I recommend calling their official customer service number (probably listed on the back of your card or on their official website) before calling this number.

I jut noticed that the above poster claimed that s/he called the number on the back of their card.  From what I've looked into, these numbers were used by AmEx at one point in time.  I don't have an AmEx account and called their official customer service number (taken from their website) and the representative confirmed that they had no reason to be calling me.  I then proceeded to report this number and others to the FTC.

googled this number while it was coming thru on my cell phone. from everything i read here, i don't know what to think...but here are the facts

-i did apply for an american express card this week online.
-after applying i was sent a secure email from amex asking me to call an 866 number affiliated with them.my information was confirmed at this point.

-today (3 days later) i received 5 calls in a row from this number. i picked up the fourth and, following advice i found on here, did not provide them with my social security and birthdate they requested. the woman calling immediately hung up without explaining why she was even calling. ten minutes later the same women/number called again (5th time). it took her a moment to realize she was calling me AGAIN, confirmed that and immediately hung up.

-i called amex helpline....this is where it turns into a headache. the first gentleman i spoke with said it wasn't a question he could answer and gave me a new number. the second man i spoke with claimed this 801 number is affiliated with amex traveler's checks. when i asked him why they would be calling, he couldn't come up with an answer and transfered me to a woman. she was the worst, WITHOUT asking me what phone number i was calling about was, she took my information and told me "i'd like to take this time to congratulate on your application, is there anything else i can help you with today" when i repeated my question about the legitimacy of this number (again without actually providing the 801 digit number) she replied "You have nothing to worry about."

the rest of the conversation was a mess, but when i finally gave her the phone number to check, she claimed it was their "welcome center".

conclusion: no one there knows what is going on.
