This is a phishing scam. Got a call and VM this morning from this number. The voicemail did a good job of making it sound like a legitimate call from American Express, with a reference number and extension. I called the actual American Express and they confirmed that this is not one of their numbers. Do not give any information to this number.
Rcvd a call from this number. I added my husband to this acct on Monday so felt that they might be calling to verify. First question: Wanted my SS#. I refused and gave her my name and asked what they were calling me for. She said without SS#, she would not speak to me. Fairly rude for customer service. Hung up and called the # on the back of my AMEX card. Rep said that is, indeed, an AMEX telephone # but that they had not made the call, didnt need verification on the addition of my husband and showed no attempts to contact me for ANY reason and that they would never ask for SS#. Said if anymore calls are received, to tell whoever is calling that you will call # on back of your AMEX card and check to see if the call is valid and if any information is actually needed.
I received a phone call from 801-945-5000 and she knew my name. Was an woman with an Indian accent claiming to be from American Express and asking if I had tried to open a credit card with them. I said no. She says someone used my name on their application form to try to open a credit card. So then she says "OK. We won't process it. But First I need some personal information from you." I told her I wasn't giving her any personal information. She said "OK, I won't process this" and I hung up on her.
What she doesn't know is that just last year I got a call from Capital One telling me someone tried to open a credit card under my name & Social Security number. And this woman gave me my own Social Security number. She said she had to do research to find my new phone number because I cancelled my land line. I had just signed up for alerts from my local Fire Dept. She knew that. That's how she got my number. Anyway, she did not ASK me for any personal info. She knew all my info. Then she gave me the numbers for the 3 credit companies telling me to file fraud alerts. SHE was Legitimate and did work for Capital One because I looked up their number and called back asking if someone from there called me. They had. They said that was their fraud Dept. So she was right that I was a victim of ID theft. My point is that this person from last year was legitimite from from Capital One.
BUT THIS PERSON WHO CALLED ME this Saturday from 8019455000 from so-called American Express is definitely a scammer. Scammers ask for information. The Real banks KNOW all your info and don't ask you for personal info. I saw a commenter above saying these people can take a real phone number from American Express and enter it in their phone making it look like the real American Express is calling. So I know that's what this woman was doing.
I received a call from this number, was a accented indian woman much like all of the above. She told me a credit card application was received blah blah. I told her I did not apply and asked in what method it was sent in. She told me online and needed to verify my last 4 of social and year of birth. I gave her the info and then she asked for my address. I started to get a weird feeling so I declined that info but she said that she would stop the application. When we hung up I called the number to AmEx from their website and they verified there was an application put in for me online so I also had them send in a frad report to the credit agency.
All in all I have no idea if the info I gave the first woman will hurt me in any way, but if someone applied for a credit card in my name online already, apparently my info is already out there.
Just got the same type call purportedly from 801-945-5000, which is a legitimate Amex number. However, the caller idea read "Private Number." The woman had an Indian accent.. I made her spell her name, which was Manasvini (of course probably false). She knew my name and that I had recently done something about a credit card, but when she asked for the last four digits of my social security number, I said no, send me a letter if there is a problem, but I don't give out information to people who call me.
I called Amex immediately with the number on my card, and the representative said there was no indication at all in my record that would suggest the need for additional information. He said he would report it to
Amex security. Obviously a case of a sammer spoofing the caller ID.
The lesson as other say is never supply information to people who call you. Call back to a number that you know is legitimate--preferably from your card itself.
This is a scam.. Says it was American Express ... guy with an Indian accent.. Call the real AMX ....Dont give them any info.. when in doubt call back with the number on the card
