Claimed to be a national Women's Business Networking organization, based in New York City. They had an ad on LinkedIn stating it was a free group. Pretended to interview me for this "prestigious" organization, then promptly wanted $500 - $750 for different membership levels. When I declined and said that the ad had said that they were a free organization and asked if that wasn't the case, the telemarketer lectured me on how it's an honor to be included in this group and it was unprofessional to ask her about cost. Very rude. I was transferred between two people - Stacy and Kelly.
I believe it's the female professional group I applied for on LinkedIn. I looked up the group after I provided my info and saw that it's pretty scammy. Dang.
I did click on an "invitation" ad in LinkedIn about two weeks ago to apply for an International women's business group of some kind (don't remember now what it was called), and had to write why I would be a benefit to the organization in addition to my email address, name, etc. before clicking "Submit." It seemed legit at the time, like the group was discerning and interested in helping foster communications between professional women all over the world. The info on the thank you page said they would contact me, but I never heard from anyone.
I wonder now if these repeated and annoying calls are for that organization? If so, no, thank you! If you can't leave a message and call repeatedly (sometimes within moments of previous calls) then forget it! I don't want to be associated with your organization at all.
Yes, I did the same thing. Now they will not stop calling. I almost didn't continue app when asked for number, but thought since it was through LinkedIn it was going to be good. The Association seemed to be on the up and up.
Today I received a call from this number. (646)866 6779. The name of the man was speaking was John. He told me about an application to be part of WBN (Women Business Network) that they have been advertising in LinkedIn, he asked me about my profile, my professional experience and some personal information. At the end he confirmed to me that I was accepted to be member and he told me that they will send me an email with the information so I can initiate in the network. And that I have to pay 799USD for a lifetime membership or I can select a plan for 5 years paying 599USD... I reject to pay anything and I ask him to send me an email with the information.
I have not received any information.
I would like to warn you about this kind of fraud. Be alert to avoid these situations.
