just received the identical call. Told caller I have many grandsons and tell me your first name. Caller hung up. Got to find a way of getting rid of these kinds of calls. Number is now blocked on my phone
Him: "grandma, where are you"
Me: "I'm home, how are you?"
Him: "I'm not so good Grandma, I had a wreck, and broke my nose"
Me: "Who is this"
Him: "It's your oldest grandson"
Me: "NO!"
First, my grandchildren do NOT call me Grandma, I'm Grammy. Second, if you're calling on my home phone, you darn well know where I am. Third, my grandchildren do NOT have an African American dialect. So, chalk one up for the grandchild hurt scam. This was a first for me!
Called from 646-911-0208 at 9:19 A.M. on 10/29/2015:
Caller: (young male voice) Hello, Grandpa
Me: Hello, how are you doing?
Caller: I broke my nose yesterday.
Me: Who is this?
Caller: Ryan
Me: Who?
Caller: (Hung up phone after about 15 seconds)
Called this morning and said he was my oldest grandson and he was in jail in Amarillo Texas for drunk driving and he needed a 1000 dollars to get out. Actually the caller id showed the number was from New York city 646-911-0208. He then asked if his attorney called yet and I said no. I told him he wasn't getting any money from me and he hung up. Right after that a fast speaking man called and said he was the attorney and if I didn't give my grandson the money he would be arrested again and kept in jail for 30 days. I told him no. That number was from Indiana 765-330-5411. I called him back and he was eating and first just said hello and asked who I was. I told him I was going to report this number for phone scam and he said go ahead and tell Obama then hung up.
11/05/15 Just received a call from this number. Took a few seconds before anyone responded and it was a young man who said "Grandma" and then hung up before I could respond. I am expecting another call any minute. I actually fell for this scam, young man sounded much like my oldest grandson and was very good at getting the name out of me and when I said you don't call me grandma I didn't make him call me by the name he does use, but he said he was just "messing with me" when he called me grandma, but he was in jail in Mexico because he had gone there with a friend for the friend's father's funeral and was in the car with someone who had been drinking. The gentleman who got on the line then said he was at the American consulate and was trying to get the fine paid before he was sent to jail. Anyone knowing anything about Americans in jail in Mexico knows you don't let that happen. Anyway, I wound up $1,500 poorer before I got smart and checked the phone numbers. The call was coming from Canada. Of course, the next day they needed more money. They didn't get it. Stupid me didn't bother to call my grandson's phone to see if he was out of town. But the voice was incredibly like my grandson and these people are smart.
