This is a phishing scam. Got a call and VM this morning from this number. The voicemail did a good job of making it sound like a legitimate call from American Express, with a reference number and extension. I called the actual American Express and they confirmed that this is not one of their numbers. Do not give any information to this number.
I got this call today, too, asking for my son, who hasn't lived at our home for years. I phoned American Express and was told that this number was one of theirs, as was the number we had been told to call. However, when my son phoned AmEx directly, he was told that there was no application on file for him.
Reading all of the above posts, I have come to the following conclusions.
1) The number(s) does/do belong to Amex.
2) Scammers can make it APPEAR that they are calling from a legitimate AmEx number, even thought they are not.
3) Some of these calls are legitimate -- for example, if you have actually applied for a card within the past few days.
4) Some of these calls are phishing for your personal information.
Bottom Line: Whether you've applied for a card or not, or initiated a money transfer or not, NEVER give out any personal information. Tell the person that you'll have to call back. Then, as many others have suggested, phone American Express yourself, using the number on the back of your card or a number from their website, and tell them about the call. If it was legit, fine. If not, beware, because someone is trying to steal your information. If you get nervous, call all three credit bureaus and ask them to put your info into their fraud alert file.
THIS IS A SCAM!!!! If you receive a call and are asked for personal info do not give your information!!!!
I spoke with the American Express fraud department which is open 24/7. They told me there were no alerts on my account and this was an attempt to phish for personal information to be used fraudulently.
So lame! the scammer is posting BS here to make readers who might google this, think they're legitimate.
I just got a call from this number. My wife answered and they told her to have me call back and left a reference number. I called back the 800 number listed on the american express website and talked to someone. I gave her the reference number, and she looked on all of the cards in my account, but could find no indication that anyone needed to speak with me. I can only conclude it was a scam.
The phone number itself may or may not be legit, but just because you see the number on your caller ID doesn't actually mean that's who is calling you. Some of the post above saying it was legit may be telling the truth...they may have actually been called by AmEx. But some of the calls clearly are from scammers forging their caller id to use amex's real number so that it makes them look legit.
