This is a phishing scam. Got a call and VM this morning from this number. The voicemail did a good job of making it sound like a legitimate call from American Express, with a reference number and extension. I called the actual American Express and they confirmed that this is not one of their numbers. Do not give any information to this number.
Got a call from 801-945-5000. I didn't answer as it called my cell phone. NEVER applied with american express and have no credit cards with them. There is no reason for them to call me. SCAM!
I think what you are seeing is that someone is hacking a legitimate call...this number IS American Express...I have been working with their tech support staff on an issue with their website and every call I get from their support technician shows this as the number. It IS legitimate. But it sounds to me like many of you have been getting SPAM calls reflecting this as the calling number, so that leads me to believe someone else has hacked the number somehow and is showing it to you as the number they are calling from. I'm calling this an Event Reminder because no other option in the drop down comes close to the true nature of this call, which was totally legitimate.
You raise a valid question. But I can tell you that when the first call came from this number I ignored it and came here to check it out. I saw AMEX listed several times, and I knew I had just called AMEX and was expecting a call back. So when the call came in a 2nd time I answered it and concluded my business with AMEX. What brought me here to enter a report was the feeling that I needed to contradict all of the reports that this is NOT AMEX...because it mostly certainly was, in my case. I had called for tech support and this is the number that was displayed in my caller ID when they called back to address my issue. Does that mean that some hacker somewhere is not spoofing this number and using it for illegitimate purposes? Absolutely not. But in my 1 experience, it was a legitimate call.
